Understanding Travel Photography.
1. The best way to understand travel photography is to buy brochures and travel magazines to see what type of images are published. Travel images tend to be well-exposed, colourful images that tell a story about a certain place.
2. Travel photography covers a large range of subjects and should portray a place, its people and culture. You will need to have the ability to take perfect images along with being creative. You will need to be willing to photograph from dawn to dusk to make your journey profitable, so planning ahead is vital.
Before you travel
3. Before you start to travel make sure that you study your destination. Find out where are the best places to go to. This will spare you valuable time and expense. Also find out if there are laws that will prevent you from photographing certain areas. Some countries can be strict and will not welcome strangers. Information can be obtained for your local embassy regarding all aspects of your trip.
What to photograph when travelling:
4: The chances are that if you are travelling to a popular destination it will be crowed during the day and in the evening. The best time to shoot will be early morning before most of the tourists arrive.
5. Places: the list of different places that can be photographed is endless. Remember that most places have been captured in the past and to be a successful travel photographer you’ll have to put your own mark on each scene. Try to approach each scene differently. Find a different approach to make it stand out.
6. People and culture: Try to capture the local people in your travel photography. Photograph things they do every day. The food they eat can make for a good colourful shot. Travel publishers will want images that will sell a destination.
7. Find out where the local markets are held. Markets tend to be very colourful and can tell a lot about a place. Photograph the different items for sale and the people selling them. Street signs and signs of general interest should also be photographed.
8. Interiors and exteriors of buildings and shops always make for good travel images. Unique storefronts and what is displayed in the window should also be photographed.
9. Photograph people at work on the street. A policeman directing traffic or construction workers can make an effective image. Don’t be aggressive or get in the way. Remember that you’re a guest in a different country and must behave like so.
Technical Photography tips while travelling:
10. Calculating exposure while travelling can be tricky. The best exposure setting on your digital camera for travel photography will be the centre-weighted metering system, which is extremely accurate. This will take a general light reading from all areas of the scene to calculate exposure.
11. If you are shooting with film make sure that you wait until you get home to get your film processed. Film processors in a strange place may not handle it with care.
Photography equipment that is needed for travel photography:
12. Tripod: A tripod can be awkward when travelling. If you find it too bulky buy a monopod. A monopod can be good to support your camera but will not be good enough for low light exposures. You may find that a beanbag will be handy.
13. Lens: You will need a few different lenses for travel photography. A telephoto lens is necessary for getting in close to the subject. If you tend to shoot landscape images you will need a wild angle lens. While photographing in a city it is best to use your standard lens, but be ready to change it if the occasion arises.
14. Memory: if you are interested in travel photography make sure that you have enough memory to record all the shots that you take.
15. Filters: the three main filters to have in your bag will be a polarizing filter, a warm up filter and a set of Neutral Density Filters. The polarizing filter will reduce any unwanted glare that you come across in a city, town or landscape. The warm up filter will add life to a dull image on a dull or overcast day. Carry a Neutral Density Filter set if you tend to shoot landscape images.
Selling your travel images.
16. The easiest way to make money from your travel images is for a stock agency to sell them. Stock agencies have customers constantly looking for new travel images. A stock agency will not accept images that are poor in quality and you will need to be able to supply them with a large selection.
17. The only other way to sell travel images is to try and market them yourself. You will need to create an online portfolio of your work and submit images directly to publishers. This will be very time consuming and won’t leave you with much time to travel.
19. Try to put pen to paper when travelling. You will need to create a good caption for each image. If you can write a story about the destination you will give yourself a great chance of selling your work. Most of the great travel photographers are freelance journalists.
