Photography restoration is an art that takes time to develop - any photographer with great Photoshop skills can add restoration to his portfolio.

Have you got old black and white images at home that need to be restored? Thanks to today’s digital technology and image editing software, photography restoration is an hugely successful method of saving valuable image collections.

For the photographer with time on his hands this could be a valuable way of making extra money.  All that is needed is the image editing software and a good quality flat bed scanner. Excellent Photoshop skills are required for restoring images to a good quality.

Before you scan an image make sure that you are capable of restoring the image. Make sure that the scanner and the photos are clean. Scan images at a minimum of 300 dpi - this will enable you to print extremely sharp images once the editing work is done. If possible scan at a higher resolution.

Over time images will become faded from too much light. Photoshop has a range of tools that will help you to get the contrast and saturation right. The contrast will help distinguish between light and dark areas of the image.

If you are setting up a photography restoration business you will need to have a good quality flat bed scanner and the best possible editing software available.  Saturation will bring life to the pictures. The levels and curves tool in Photoshop will also help fix or remove colours in the image. Old images tend to become yellow from too much smoke or moisture in a room. Levels will also help adjust shadows and highlights.

Some old images will have scratches or pieces missing - the Clone tool is ideal for fixing this problem  - it works by copying and pasting a similar area over the area that is damaged. Most editing software also has a dust filter that is useful for getting rid of dust, specks, and scratches. This filter should only be applied to the affected area.

    Dealing with your customers.

Do not offer a service that you cannot give. Image restoration takes time and skills to master it correctly. Make sure that you can provide the skills that your offer.  Let your customer know that restoring an image is time consuming. Giving them a time frame upfront to collect an image could put you under preasure.

Create a portfolio of before and after images  - this will show customers the quality of your work. If photos are too badly damaged don‘t spend hours trying to repair them - the chances are that you may not get rewarded for your efforts or get the results that you require.

Before you price the restoration work know exactly how long it will take and price accordingly.
