    Information about Garden photography

Tips for creating perfect Garden images.

    Garden Photography Exposure:

    1.  A light meter is very useful to calculate exposure in the garden. The most accurate way to use your light meter is to place it beside the plant or flower you wish to photograph and point the meter at the lens of the camera. This is called taking a reflective light reading and it is very accurate.

    2. Using a grey card will also calculate exposure for you. Place the grey card beside the subject that you are photographing and point your light meter or camera at the grey card to calculate the correct exposure.  This will help to calculate tricky exposures when the day is too bright.

    Garden Photography Composition:

    3. Focus on the subject and use a small f/number to throw the background out of focus. An f/5.6 or a smaller f/number should achieve this.

    4. Fill the frame  - your picture of a flower, plant or creature should fill the frame. Use a large aperture to blur any unwanted background out of the image.

    5. Work with odd numbers in the garden, odd numbers are always more attractive. Three flowers in the garden will be more attractive and easier on the eye than two.

Light : will transform your images - learn to use it correctly.

    6. Shoot your garden images on an overcast day. This will allow you to minimize harsh shadows. You can always use your flash to add light if needed.

    7. If you are shooting on a bright day use a grey card to calculate exposure. Your cameras meter will over-expose your images if the light is too bright.

    8. Reflectors are great for bouncing light into areas that are poorly lit. These are light to carry and are cheap to buy.

    Photography Filters for the Garden:

    9. Warm-up filters:  On an overcast day images in the garden often appear cold and dull. Try using a warm-up filter. These filters will remove the dull effect that you get if shooting without the sun. There are several warm up filters to choose from. The 81b warm filter is perfect for garden photography.

    10. A polarizing filter can be used in the garden to get rid of any unwanted reflections or to add more contrast to your images. It is best used when light is entering your garden from the side.

    Different types of Garden Photography:

    11. Macro photography is a challenge but rewarding when done correctly. All types of small creatures can be photographed. Use a tripod to create sharp images.

    12.  Plant and flower images are the most common types of garden photography. Try to shoot them differently. Be creative.

    13. Wildlife images - during the different seasons your garden should be full of different types of wildlife. For photographing birds, it may be advisable to create a hide.

    14. Abstract garden images: unusual patterns in the garden will make for great abstract shots. If you cannot find nice patterns wait until you have a windy day to shoot. Set your camera to a slow shutter speed - 2 seconds or more and start taking images of colourful flowers.  The final images should be a colourful  abstract. Remember that you will need to change the ISO and aperture to calculate the correct exposure.

    Photography equipment:

    15. After your camera and lens, a tripod is the most important piece of equipment you should carry. It will help keep your images sharp. Also worth considering are a light meter and a grey card.
