There are many amateurs who would love to make a living from their photography - but to become a full time photographer you need a lot more than the skills.

For any photographer starting out, one of the hardest elements is to try and sell his images. There are many ways of doing this; some of the best ways are listed below.

Galleries: Selling your prints in galleries may seem like a daunting task for any amateur, but with the right approach, the gallery market can be rewarding. This is something that you can hold in conjunction with other amateur photographers in the area, which will help keep the cost down. Getting started can be easy, contact your local gallery and show them your work. Most gallery hosts will always be willing to support the local artist.

Photojournalism: Does your photography tell a story? If so, and it is technically perfect, it should be good enough to get it published.  Most images that are published in a newspaper should not need a big story to explain what is going on. The image should tell the reader what is happening.  Photography for photojournalism should always be creative and have the ability to react quickly when he comes across a scene that may be newsworthy.

Photojournalism can fall under many different types of photography but the pictures will need to be newsworthy.

Stock photography: there is always a high demand for good quality photography.  Stock agencies are always on the lookout for new images. One of the main reasons for letting an agency handle your entire sales is their customer reach. A large stock company will have thousands of clients on their books.

All photography agencies work on a commission basis. When they sell your image to an image publisher the photographer receives a percentage of the price agreed. The percentage is normally fifty percent of the sale price. The only drawback to the amateur photographer is the amount of images needed. Most agencies will require a minimum submission, which could be anywhere between fifty to five hundred images.

Create your own products: Creating and marketing your own photography products can give great satisfaction as well as giving your income a boost. There are many products that you can consider selling but it will take time and money to get going.  Photography products worth considering are greeting cards, post cards and calendars.

Portraits of people: Photographing people at events and special occasions will always create an extra income. Most amateurs that are good at portraits are usually busy at weekends photographing local events. This can be an easy market to break into if you are willing to put in the time.

Pet Portraits: Pet photography makes for a particularly tough challenge to any newcomer to photography, but if mastered successfully will be very rewarding for you and your customers. This market is growing fast and images can also be sold to the stock and magazine market.

There are plenty of ways of making money from your photography. All you need is the determination to give it a go. There are no “get rich quick” schemes for photographers - it will take time and effort.
