Turn your colour images into black and white prints.

With a basic knowledge of Photoshop and with ten minutes to spare it’s a simple process to turn standard colour photographs into classic black and white prints.

The software needed to carry out this process is Adobe Photoshop elements 2.0 and is worth investing in if you have an interest in digital photography.

Step 1.   Make sure that you are in RGB mode.

To set this go to Images > Mode and click on the RGB colour.

Step 2.  The second step is to lower the contrast of the image.

To do this go to Enhance > Adjust Brightness/Contrast > Levels.

In the dialogue box set the output levels to 35 and 210.  This will drop the contrast of the image
making the highlights and shadows softer.

Step 3.  Add a warm tone.

To do this go to Enhance > Adjust colour > Hue/Saturation

Click the Colorize box and enter the values of 32 in the hue box and 18 in the saturation box.
This will give your image a warm tone

Step 4.  Adjusting Layers and levels.

Your image may be washed out at this moment so it’s time to give it some bite.
To do this you need to add a new layer. Go to Layers > New Adjustment Layer > Levels.

In the dialogue box set the mode to Luminosity and click ok.

After clicking the Luminosity mode, the levels adjusting box should appear. Pull the white slider
to the right hand side of the histogram and the black slider to the left hand side of the histogram.
Add the value of 30 in the first box in the input levels. Make sure that the brightness is at 1.20

Step 5.  Flatten image and add some grain.

The final step is to flatten your image.
To do this go to Layers> Flatten image

You may or may not need to add some grain - if the image needs it go to Filters >  Noise/Add Noise
Make sure that you click the Gaussian and the Monochromatic Box. Enter a figure of between 4 and 8 in the percentage box.
