Camera Review - Canon EOS 7D

Canons latest DSLR, the EOS 7D is not a replacement for any of its previous models, but sits between the 50D and the 5D. Canon used direct feedback from its users to fill the large gap between amateur and professional DSLR cameras.

Canons EOS 7D is aimed at the semi-professional market and has an impressive new 18MP CMOS sensor. Its Dual DIGIC IV processor allows a great level of detail, which in turn allows the 7D to shoot up to eight frames per second. It is also better at handling noise levels and shows little or no noise up to ISO 3,600.

ISO settings are between 100 to 6400, which can be extended to 12,800. Noise is noticeable at 12,800. The new metering system on the 7D produces excellent quality and accurate detail in highlight and shadow areas. It is accurate both indoor and out and can handle lowlight extremely well. It also produces better colours than previous models.

The AF system is fast and accurate and is very suitable for the photographer who is tracking a fast moving subject. Continuous shooting of 8fps for up to 126 JPEG or 12 Raw images is possible when using a UDMA card.

The Canon EOS 7D is not a cheap camera but closes the gap between amateur and professional DSLR cameras. It is designed with the semi-professional in mind and produces excellent results to justify its price tag. To get the best value out of the EOS 7D a good quality lens should always be used.
